Welcome
Best of Summer Learning 2011:At Pope Elementary, Mrs. Stephens helped students reinforce what they are learning in The Chelsea Bank (TCB) by having them role plat the jobs in the simulation. Her classroom was set up to represent different areas of the bank: a desk for the receptionist; an area for the bank manager; and a section for the tellers. She gave students play money which "tellers used with "customers" who, in turn, had o complete and hand in correctly completed deposit slips. The ultimate foal was to five students a realistic experience of what it is like to work in a bank.

At Nathaniel Pope Elementary our small size is our biggest asset. Because we are small, we can focus on the unique needs of each of our students. No student slips through the cracks, and no child is left behind. The teachers and staff know each individual student personally, and work to provide an educational experience uniquely suited to each child’s own academic and social needs.
Pope School is a small school that can make a big difference in your child’s life. Research has shown that small schools can increase student engagement and academic achievement. Since the teachers and staff know each individual student, at small schools student attendance improves and behavior problems decline.
A small school with…
BIG opportunities
Although Pope is a small school, we offer a wide variety of learning opportunities to our students. As a Writing and Fine Arts Magnet Cluster School, we partner with Second City and Art\ Resources in Teaching (ART) to provide artists and performers who visit our classrooms and lead students in creative activities that support their literacy development. As a community school, we offer programs that extend beyond the school day, including recreational sports, dancing, arts and crafts and robotics.
BIG expectations
Because we are a small school, we can tailor our instructional program to meet the needs of individual students and ensure each student’s success. We hold each of our students to the highest standard, and work to ensure that all of our students meet their potential, and are prepared to successfully continue their educational career in high school.
BIG results
In the past 10 years, the reading and math test scores of Pope Elementary School students have risen dramatically. Last year, the majority of our students met or exceeded the Illinois State standards in reading and math. Pope School poetry slam teams won first place in two citywide competitions, and Pope won trophies in four of the seven Academic Olympic competitions in our area, including first place in the writing competition. Our students build on their accomplishments at Pope to achieve even greater academic success. Graduating students this year were admitted to several college prep high schools, including Lane Tech, Lincoln Park IB and Whitney Young.
